Winter Olympics

The Austrian-Canadian Centre was an active part of the 1988 Winter Olympics. The Austrian Olympic Committee created the “House Austria” in the Main hall and during the Olympics Austrian athletes and guests from all over the world celebrated at the Austrian-Canadian Centre. Members of the Austrian-Canadian Society were part of the Opening Ceremonies at the 1988 Olympics wearing their traditional Austrian costumes.

50th Anniversary

The Honorary Consul of Austria for Alberta, Nick Demiantschuk, brought greetings from the Austrian Ambassador and Roland Pirker of the Austrian-Canadian Council from Ottawa was congratulating the Society. There were many more speeches and congratulations, Professor Patrouch and Professor Szabo from the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Edmonton and Annemarie Juravel of the German Canadian Association of Alberta were among the congratulants as well as representatives of Schuhplattler Verein Enzian and Austrian Choir Heimatecho.

Entertainment was provided by Aiga Helmer with a beautiful Harp Trio, the Schuhplattlerverein Enzian performed their traditional dances. Choir Heimatecho presented their wonderful Austrian songs and after the official program Leo Kladnik and Frank Vreçar played some familiar tunes on their Accordions.

Everyone enjoyed the exquisite luncheon with a spectacular dessert buffet and a beautiful Anniversary cake. All the catering was prepared and served well by our accomplished staff at the Austrian-Canadian Centre.

A lot of work and preparation went into this 50th anniversary celebration and the Austrian-Canadian club is grateful and proud to have so many volunteers and staff, who did an outstanding job organizing the event.

A very special thank you to everyone who helped on behalf of the board of Directors and the President.

Ladies

The Austrian-Canadian Society’s Ladies Group and Volunteers have been very active since the beginning of the Club and they contributed largely to the success of the Club. They always made crafts and did a lot of baking for various events all these years. The annual Christkindlmarkt in November is their main event. They make Christmas decorations and crafts, bake cookies and cakes and sell it all at the Christmas market. Over the years the Ladies group and also the male volunteers have been helping at different club events and representing the club at the Spruce Meadows Festival of Nations. In the early years they participated at the International Food Fair at the Jubilee Auditorium supplying traditional Austrian baking and specialties.
